Using GABA As A Natural Remedy for Anxiety and Stress

GABA’s role in the body is as a regulator of stress and anxiety levels. It is a neurotransmitter – it amplifies, sends out, and moderates signals between a neuron and other cells. Since GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter, it is able to lessen the activity in the central nervous system (CNS) to acceptable levels when it is overstimulated. As such, GABA is incredibly important in the way of managing one’s anxiety levels.

GABA is an amino acid, but there is something special about it. Amino acids are usually referred to as alpha amino acids, and these are incorporated into protein. GABA does fully not fit this criteria, so very few refer to GABA as an amino acid.

Originally created in 1883, GABA’s usefulness was still unknown to the world. It took many decades until, in 1950, scientists finally began to unravel the capabilities of GABA. And even then, it was not only until recently that GABA would gain popularity as a dietary supplement to assist those who have a deficiency of GABA in their body.

Though GABA can be used to treat those suffering from anxiety and stress, its application is even more diverse than that. GABA can also treat those who suffer from epilepsy, insomnia, and body pains.

There is a misconception that GABA will cause the user to get drowsy and fall asleep. That is a side effect of when GABA is taken in improper amounts. If ingested in the right dosages, GABA should not cause the person to fall asleep or even to feel drowsy.

The greatest benefit of GABA is how few and safe the potential side effects are. There are many who take GABA along with other natural remedies like Kava Kava since the risk is so low. Those who take too much GABA may experience drowsiness, slight stomach discomfort, or mild nausea.

The optimal dosage for each individual can vary wildly, as each individual has differing amounts of GABA already in their body. On average, taking approximately 200mg of GABA per day will aid in feeling calm and relaxed. However, 100mg can also be taken daily for some relief and a lesser chance of experiencing any side effects.
